Marvelous meals from the south of Germany
Germany’s food culture is different in south Germany, compared to the north. This article contains some of my personal favourites from the south of Germany that you definitely won’t regret trying. We also have an article about north German specialties. What cultural foods do you prefer?
Literally translated to “liver cheese“, this dish is made from pork, bacon and corned beef. Those ingredients are all ground very finely and then baked in a bread pan. This gives it its iconic shape and crust.
Leberkäse is often eaten as more of a snack, for example in a bread roll, but can also be used as the meat component during lunch or dinner.
This dish is available in one form or another in nearly all parts of Germany and you should really try it out if you get the chance!
This amazing dish is sweet for sure, yet filling enough to be more than a simple dessert!
A Germknödel is a fluffy yeast dough dumpling. It is filled with jam and served swimming in either melted butter or vanilla sauce, with poppy seeds on top.
While certainly a heavy dish, it is a much beloved component of Bavarian and Austrian cuisine that can also be found in many other restaurants across Germany.
Chopped up pancakes, need I say more?! No, seriously, this dessert, named after an Austrian Emperor (Kaiser) who really liked it, is simply that:
Fluffy shredded pancakes served with powdered sugar and apple sauce (and sometimes whipped cream).
It is exactly as good as it sounds, and it’s really no surprise that many people love it. Told ya that food from Germany can be really good!
Looks amazing, doesn’t it?
